How to clean makeup brushes without damaging them

A proper wash needs less equipment than a crowded cleaning kit. Protect the bristles and the glued joint, then give everything time to dry.

In this guide

The brush that blended yesterday’s foundation still has yesterday’s foundation in it. Before deciding it has stopped working, give the bristles a proper wash and enough time to dry.

The useful distinction is between cleaning the working fibers and soaking the whole tool. You want to remove makeup without sending water into the joint that holds the brush together.

The short version

  1. Gather a gentle brush cleanser, clean towel and drying space.
  2. Wet the bristle tips with lukewarm water.
  3. Lather gently, rinse and repeat until the rinse water is clear.
  4. Press out moisture and reshape the bristles.
  5. Dry flat with the tips beyond the counter edge.

Make room before turning on the tap

Choose a time when you can leave the brushes alone afterward. Washing your only foundation brush five minutes before getting dressed creates a drying problem that another cleanser will not solve.

Set a clean towel near the sink and clear a safe stretch of counter for drying. Keep the towel’s edge steady so the handles stay supported while the bristles can extend beyond it.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing makeup brushes every seven to ten days. A weekly reminder is one practical way to keep that job from disappearing beneath everything else on the bathroom list.

Wet the bristles, not the whole brush

Hold the brush with its tip pointing down and run lukewarm water over the working bristles. Keep the handle and metal collar out of the stream as much as possible.

That collar is often called the ferrule, and the glued connection inside it is why a mug of soaking brushes is a poor shortcut. The aim is to loosen makeup where it sits, not leave the whole head underwater.

If your particular brush has special care instructions, follow those first. This method is intended for ordinary washable makeup brushes, including the synthetic tools in the set below.

Use a little cleanser and a gentle motion

EcoTools’ brush-shampoo directions call for dampened bristles, a small amount of cleanser and gentle lathering. Work the tips through clean fingers or across your palm instead of grinding them hard into the sink.

Rinse, then look at what is leaving the brush. If the water still carries makeup, repeat the gentle lather-and-rinse process; adding a large squeeze of shampoo at the start simply gives you more cleanser to remove.

Keep working until the rinse water is clear and the cleanser is thoroughly gone. A darker-looking bristle tip is not, by itself, proof that more scrubbing will help, use the rinse and the feel of the fibers rather than chasing an artificially white brush.

Dry flat and leave the shape alone

Press out excess moisture with a clean towel without twisting the bundle of bristles. Smooth the head back into its usual shape while it is damp.

Lay the brush flat with its tips over the counter edge. Do not stand a wet brush bristle-end-up in a cup, where water can run back toward that glued connection.

Real Techniques’ cleaning guide also distinguishes a quick spot clean from a deeper wash. A wipe may help with a color change, but it does not replace the weekly wash or make a damp brush ready to pack.

Wait until the bristles are fully dry before putting the brush in an enclosed pouch. Drying time varies with the density of the head and the room, so an overnight plan is more useful than a promised number of minutes.

Choose a cleanser before replacing the brushes

The EcoTools six-ounce shampoo is a rinse-off option for this job. Treat it as a cleanser, not a guarantee of disinfection, and follow the directions on the bottle you receive.

The Real Techniques Everyday Essentials set is an option if you need replacement tools: four synthetic brushes and a separate sponge. There is no reason to replace an entire set because one brush needs washing; clean the existing tools first and decide what is actually missing.

Put the clean tools back into a clean place

Wipe out the brush holder or pouch before returning the dry brushes to it. Keep a small place for used tools so the one carrying yesterday’s blush does not get mistaken for a clean one.

Then attach the wash to a recurring moment you already remember. A few brushes cleaned regularly are easier to live with than a growing pile waiting for one heroic afternoon at the sink.

A few options for the job.

Use what you already have if it does the job. These are alternatives to compare, not a list of things you need to buy.
