A bra strap that won’t stay put gives you a specific shopping brief. At Blum’s of Patchogue, the fitting conversation starts with what the customer wants to change.
Blum’s is marking its 100th anniversary, a milestone for the family-owned business, Ortiz said.
“What hasn’t been working for you with your current one, and what would you like from a new one?” is the question the team usually asks, marketing director Anastasia Ortiz said in emailed answers to Debjo’s Boutique.
“Some customers want a fresh fitting or to try a different style; others are looking for something specific, such as more coverage, less coverage, or additional support,” Ortiz said. “Listening helps us understand what they need and find the right fit for them.”
The answer gives a fitter something more precise than a size. The customer can explain what she wants to keep and what needs to feel different.
A fitting you can steer
“A first fitting can feel overwhelming, so we make our customers’ comfort the priority,” Ortiz said. “Fittings are complimentary, and you never have to undress—we let you choose the experience that feels right for you and move at your pace.”
The shop’s bra-fitting and swim-fitting pages also describe the services as complimentary. That covers the fitting service; the clothes have their own prices.
“We usually start by asking about your current size and what you’re looking for in a bra or swimsuit,” Ortiz said. “If you’d prefer to be measured over your shirt, a thin, fitted top works best.”
“Don’t have one? We can help you find something in the shop to wear while we take your measurements,” she said.
“If you’re unsure where to start, that’s perfectly fine,” Ortiz said. “We’ll bring you a variety of styles to try, ask what feels comfortable, and narrow down the options based on your preferences.”
Trying something on gives the customer another chance to describe what works. In the process Ortiz outlines, that feedback helps decide which item comes next.
Let the clothes move
“For readers over 50, we’d suggest starting with your lifestyle and what feels right for you—not what you think you’re supposed to wear,” Ortiz said. “Every body has different needs, and comfort can look different for everyone.”
Her checks include movement as well as appearance. “When trying on a bra, check that the band feels secure without digging in, the cups lie smoothly, and the straps stay comfortably in place,” Ortiz said. “Move around a little to see how it feels throughout the day.”
“If you prefer a wire-free style, we can help you find one that still offers good support,” she said. “For swimwear, look for the coverage and support you feel comfortable in, and check that the suit stays in place when you move.”
“Many of our customers lead active lives in their 50s and beyond, so finding a style that suits your activities and feels comfortable matters,” Ortiz said.
Blum’s is at 27 East Main Street in Patchogue, and its website has details about both fitting services. Bring the problem that sent you shopping, describe what you’d like to change, and use the try-on to see whether the next option answers it.
