At ScrubzBody in Farmingdale, a jar of sugar scrub gives friends a project to work on together. The Make Your Own Scrubz parties began with an idea Roberta Perry’s late sister brought into their shop.
“My late sister, Michelle, came into our first shop in 2012 and decided that we were going to host parties,” Perry wrote in an email interview with Debjo’s Boutique. “I fought the idea at first but she convinced me that it was a good idea.”
Perry still associates a party at the store with Michelle’s voice saying “I told you so.” Her explanation of its purpose was equally direct: “The whole purpose was to remind people, and women in particular that self-care is really self-love. Fun and pampering really do go together.”

The jar supplies the next step
The sequence begins before guests choose a fragrance. “First everyone gets a hand scrub to learn about the product,” Perry wrote. “Then they decorate their jars and bags. We take out the scent sheets and guests select which ones they want to smell.”
“They learn about combinations and how best to mix the fragrances together with the scrub,” she wrote. “They take home a full-sized jar of the natural sugar scrub.”

A task can make room for conversation
“Our parties are a combination of craft, pampering, great food if included, and lots of laughter and conversation,” Perry wrote.
Some guests already know the shop; others arrive with less sense of what to expect. Perry wrote: “I think some people have an idea of what to expect if they have been to the store to shop, but others are so pleasantly surprised by the scrub itself, the quality of our party food (we source locally from Nutty Recovery Room, Chef Tina) and the general fun atmosphere of being in a place that caters to their soft side.”
The scent sheets and decorating provide choices a group can compare while talking. Food is part of some options, so settle that detail with the shop when arranging the outing.
Match the outing to the group
“Parties are held during normal business hours, no Sunday’s or Saturday nights, but we will stay a little later on a Thursday or a Friday night,” Perry wrote. Ask the shop to confirm your date before making plans.
The official party page, checked Oct. 11, listed adult options at $45 for an hour or $60 for two hours with food, with six guests required and a 15% gratuity for groups of eight or more. Walk-in classes were listed at $30 or $40 depending on jar size. Check current prices and terms before booking.
Check the scents and ingredients with the shop if someone in the group has sensitivities. The activity needs to work for the people attending, as well as the calendar.
