Beauty / the evening routine
Take your makeup off without making a project of it
A rinse-off balm and a waterproof micellar option, with the directions and trade-offs that help you choose between them.

In this guide
The mascara that stayed put all afternoon can be the last thing you want to deal with before bed. A remover earns its place by making that particular job manageable.
Start with the makeup you wear and where you’ll take it off. A balm at the sink and a bottle used with a pad are different routines, and choosing between them is more useful than buying both by default.
Match the remover to the makeup
Look for directions that mention the products you need to remove, especially waterproof eye makeup. A bottle labeled for general cleansing is not automatically the same as the waterproof version beside it.
The two options here explicitly address waterproof makeup. They’re a research-based shortlist with substantial customer feedback, rather than a claim that Debbie has personally tested either one or that every skin will respond the same way.
Use a balm when rinsing fits your evening
Clinique’s Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm is designed to change from a solid balm to oil as you work it over the face. The brand identifies face makeup, waterproof eye makeup and sunscreen among the things it is made to remove.
Use dry hands on a dry face, following Clinique’s directions: massage a small amount over the makeup and rinse thoroughly. Starting with the method the product was designed for gives it a fairer trial than treating it like a wash you foam up first.
Clinique labels the balm fragrance-free, and its method suits an evening when you have a sink available. The trade-off is the rinse step and a higher upfront price than the drugstore bottle below.

Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm
3.8 oz / 125 mL
Why consider it: Balm changes to oil; designed to dissolve face and waterproof eye makeup plus sunscreen.
Keep in mind: Requires massaging onto dry skin then rinsing, so less convenient away from a sink.

Shake the waterproof micellar bottle first
The blue-cap Garnier SkinActive All-in-1 Waterproof remover is a two-phase formula. Shake it well before saturating a pad so you’re using the mixed product rather than whichever layer reaches the pad first.
For eye makeup, Garnier directs you to hold the saturated pad over closed eyes for 10–15 seconds and then wipe gently. Give that pause a chance before deciding the answer is a harder scrub.
Garnier labels this a no-rinse format, which can make it easier to fit into an evening away from your usual bathroom. It still needs pads, and a liquid formula can leave a feel you may like less than a rinse-off balm, so choose by the whole routine.

Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Waterproof Makeup Remover
13.5 fl oz / 400 mL
Why consider it: Bi-phase remover made for waterproof mascara and long-wearing makeup.
Keep in mind: Needs cotton pad or washable pad.

Compare what you'll have to do
The balm asks for dry hands, a massage and a thorough rinse. The micellar option asks for a well-shaken bottle, a saturated pad and a brief hold over closed eyes when removing eye makeup.
Both have a method; neither becomes a better choice just because its package takes up more counter space. If you already have a remover you like, try following its directions closely before adding a new one.
| Question | Clinique balm | Garnier waterproof micellar |
|---|---|---|
| Start with | Dry hands and a dry face | A well-shaken bottle and saturated pad |
| Finish with | A thorough rinse | Garnier labels it no-rinse |
| Needs a sink? | Yes, for rinsing | Not for its labeled removal method |
| Fragrance | Brand labels fragrance-free | Brand labels fragrance-free |
Make the routine easy to repeat
Keep the remover and whatever you use with it together, so the pad isn’t in one drawer while the bottle is in another bag. When traveling, check the actual container size against your luggage rules; the full-size products pictured here should not be assumed to fit carry-on liquid limits.
Follow the product’s eye-area instructions and stop using it if it causes irritation. A comfortable routine should not require you to push through a reaction to finish a bottle.
Choose the evening you can keep up with
If you like finishing at the sink, the balm is the more natural routine to try. If you prefer working with a pad, start with the waterproof micellar method and pay attention to the finish it leaves.
Put that one option where you’ll use it tonight. You can decide whether it has earned a permanent place after using it as directed, rather than finding room for another bottle first.
