Katie Dean Jewelry: give each necklace somewhere to sit

Two necklaces can look separate when you put them on and end up sharing the same spot by lunchtime. Before adding another delicate chain, look at where your favorite pendant actually sits on the neckline you wear.

Katie Dean’s account of starting her jewelry business begins with people asking about pieces she wore. Her designer story describes handmade, delicate jewelry and the possibility of trying a new piece while still feeling like yourself.

That approach leaves a practical question for the person wearing it: what does another necklace add to the one already there? A fine chain can give a pendant room, while another pendant may ask to occupy the same space.

Use the necklace you already wear

Put the familiar piece on first, with the top you plan to wear. See whether the opening above or below it would let a second chain remain visible.

A fixed difference in chain length won’t produce the same arrangement on every person. The pendant’s size and the position of the clasp matter too, so compare the actual measurements with your own necklace rather than copying the number from a photograph.

Two pieces can be the whole arrangement. If the first carries a meaningful charm, a quieter chain may be all you want beside it.

Keep the arrangement comfortable

The Katie Dean collection includes necklaces along with earrings, rings and bracelets. Browse for the particular space you want to fill; owning a focal piece already can narrow the choice considerably.

For each candidate, read the metal composition, care information and any length adjustment. A delicate appearance doesn’t tell you how the piece is constructed or whether its clasp will be comfortable to use.

Try the arrangement while sitting and moving, the necklaces have to live through the day as well as the mirror check. If they keep competing for the same place, wearing them separately may give each one more room.

Choose the additional necklace only when it contributes something you can see and comfortably keep wearing. The point of a layer is the relationship between the pieces, and sometimes that relationship works best with just one on at a time.
