Ally’s Woodworking gives one board two roles at family gatherings

A flight board has finished its first job when everybody takes a glass. Roza Ally’s reversible design gives it another use: turn it over and the same piece can hold appetizers.

The first projects were part of the house

“Ally’s Woodworking began in 2002 out of necessity when we purchased a home that needed extensive renovations,” Ally said in emailed answers to Debjo’s Boutique. “From rebuilding an old, unsafe staircase to creating custom closets and installing new flooring, I quickly found myself developing woodworking skills and acquiring the tools to bring our home to life.”

The projects continued after the renovations. “I began designing and building custom furniture and exploring more creative projects for our home,” she said. “Eventually, we ran out of room for my creations, so I started making pieces for friends and family.”

“I especially enjoy creating pieces that bring people together, whether it’s sharing a meal, enjoying a drink, or simply spending time with loved ones,” Ally said.

A shallower opening changes the board

Family gatherings gave the flight board its purpose. “After holiday celebrations and gatherings, we often enjoy winding down together over a tasting of cordials or digestifs,” Ally said.

“Our original flight boards featured holes cut completely through the wood to hold the glasses,” she said. “The idea for a reversible design came about somewhat unexpectedly when I noticed our flight boards sitting alongside similarly shaped charcuterie boards.”

“By redesigning the glass holders as recessed openings rather than through-holes, we created a board that could serve drinks on one side and appetizers on the other,” Ally said. The change leaves a serving surface on the reverse.

“Once everyone has selected their drink, simply flip the board over and transform it into a charcuterie display filled with your favorite cheeses, nuts, fruits, and other delicious bites,” Ally said. The drinks come off before the food goes on.

The wood needs a routine afterward

Ally’s care instructions start after the gathering: “Always hand wash it with warm, soapy water, and never place it in the dishwasher or allow it to soak.”

“Dry it thoroughly after washing and periodically condition the wood with food-grade mineral oil, beeswax, or our own Ally’s Woodworking Board Butter to maintain its natural beauty and protect the finish,” she said.

If tasting drinks and appetizers already belong at your table, the recessed holders let one board serve both parts of the evening. Pass the care instructions along with a gift so its next owner knows how to wash and condition it.
