Gravel & Gold: give one new garment a place in your wardrobe

A top catches your eye, but the photograph doesn’t show it beside the trousers hanging in your closet. Before buying it, name the detail you like and picture where that detail would go among clothes you already wear.

Gravel & Gold is a woman-owned San Francisco design collective established in 2008. Its original designs are produced in California, with artists and collaborators part of the brand’s account of its work.

The collective’s design principles emphasize useful clothing, creativity and flexible ways of wearing a piece. For a shopper, usefulness becomes more concrete in an outfit they can actually put on.

Keep hold of the detail that drew you in

If it’s the sleeve’s volume, see what happens beside a familiar pair of pants. If it’s the color, try imagining it against a coat or sweater you already reach for.

The piece may change the role of an old favorite, or it may seem to require several other purchases before you could wear it. That difference is worth settling before the photograph becomes a shopping list.

Proportion is something you can adjust, you can change a cuff or a tuck without deciding that your whole wardrobe needs another shape. Try one change, then look at the complete outfit.

Check the garment beyond the pose

Compare the listed garment measurements with clothing you enjoy wearing. The size label gives you less information than knowing where the actual fabric will sit and how much room it leaves.

Read the fabric and care instructions for that particular item too. A similar silhouette can behave differently in another material, and the care after wearing it should be something you’ll keep doing.

A photograph can help you see the proportions, but the outfit also needs to work while you sit and move. Something that only looks right while you’re standing still may get fewer outings than you expected.

Browse the Gravel & Gold collection with a specific outfit in mind. A useful addition gives the detail you liked somewhere to live among your clothes, without making every other piece into a problem to solve.
